Friends of Today's Music

Friends of Today's Music was established in 1986. With a firm commitment to the music of our time, and indeed to the future of classical music, FTM has sponsored the creation of a wide variety of significant works, written especially for students by many of today's leading, internationally renowned composers. Each commissioned work is premiered by young musicians during the MTAC convention while the audience follows along with the published score. This innovative program brings composer, performer, and audience together for an adventure into the music of today.

Celebrates 25th Anniversary
With David Rakowski

David Rakowski has completed his new work Étude-Fantasies for Piano Four Hands. This is an intermediate level work aimed at young pianists aged 10-13. Energetic and creative, the work is structured in seven miniature movements challenging the developing pianist with technical, rhythmic and expressive elements. C.F. Peters Corporation will publish the scores. Teachers interested in submitting students to perform the premiere of this new work should submit the application form before the February 1, 2010 deadline.

In honor of twenty-five years of commissioning new works, Friends of Today’s Music plans to present all the commissioned works during the MTAC Convention in Los Angeles, July 2-6, 2010. Teachers and students are both welcome to participate in this celebration program, please consult our roster of commissions below. Contact the State Chair, Catherine O’Connor for more information and application guidelines.
